New to photography and don't know where to start?

I'm here to help! My name is Hope and I'm a wedding photographer from Virginia. I started photography back in 2020 and I dove head first into all things photos, but getting my footing was difficult. Below are some tips or things I wish people would have told me!

  • Canon has great beginner cameras! I would recommend the Canon T7 or T8 when first starting out.
  • Practice taking photos in all kinds of lighting situations. This can even include in the rain or flash photography. Sometimes things don't always go as planned and it's important to be able to adapt last minute!
  • Second shooting or shadowing is more helpful than you may think! It gives you the opportunity to build your portfolio and pick the other photographer's brain. More often than not, photographers are always willing to let you second shoot for them! Just reach out :)
  • Niching down is usually only helpful when you're further along. I wholeheartedly believe in doing what you love, but sometimes the experience is worth pushing past your fears.
  • Invest in education, but make sure it's from the right person. A few of my favorite people specifically for weddings/couples are Stephanie Marie Photo and Jai Long. I also love Kendra Ashton Photography and Hope Taylor!
  • Don't underestimate your value! You are always worth something, even when you're just starting out.

The bottom line is that you've got this! Photography is so fun and being a part of others' little moments is so worth it. Practice makes progress and you're going to get where you want to be in time! I'll share some more tips in another blog later.
